What Happens in Part 8

Literary Craft · Resolution and ThreadsResolution is the point where a story stops merely happening and starts paying off: loose ends are tied, and details that seemed like throwaway jokes turn out to have been promises. Sachar has been patient for eight parts. A thread is a small element that keeps returning, and this book has carried several, from a boy’s unspoken worry to a girl whose plain honesty is rewarded at last. Then comes the closing chapter, in which a fire drill, a cow and a great deal of noise explain why anybody would name a book after a school falling down. Great endings do not appear out of nowhere. They gather up everything the story has been quietly carrying, which is why a payoff you watched being built feels so earned.

Tying Up a Story's Threads

Why does the ending of a really good book feel so satisfying? Much of the answer lies in how the author handles the story’s many threads. Over the course of a book, a writer plants questions, jokes, and small mysteries — and a strong ending finally ties them together and will reveal their answers, a step called the resolution. When a joke set up in an early chapter pays off at the very end, the careful reader feels a burst of delight, as if the whole book had been building toward that moment. A good ending also tends to reward patience: the reader who paid attention and can recognize earlier details gets the most out of the final pages. And the very best endings leave something behind — a warm feeling, a last laugh, or an idea that continues to linger in your mind after the book is closed.
