How to Use

For teachers — setting up a class
  1. Subscribe to Online All-Access — one plan covers every book and every level, for students, families and teachers alike. A single title in print instead? Buy that workbook’s PDF on demand, no subscription needed.
  2. Choose the level, not the age. The eight levels follow the grade a book is actually taught in, and each level card shows its grade band, Lexile and AR range. A reader who finishes a level comfortably is ready for the next one.
  3. Match the edition before students buy. Every workbook is built on one specific edition; the Publishers & ISBN list gives the exact publisher and ISBN-13 so chapter and page references line up with what your class is holding.
  4. Add each reader on a Family plan. Separate reader profiles are a Family-plan feature: you pick who is studying before a part opens, so every score files under the right child. On a single-reader plan every score belongs to that one account.
For teachers — running a part

Each novel is divided into 8 parts of two to three chapters — roughly 40 minutes of work, which fits one lesson or one homework assignment. Students read the chapters in their own copy first; the workbook opens with a recap so nobody is lost if the book is at home.

  1. Assign a book and part from the Library, then have students work through the sections in order.
  2. Five sections are graded automatically — Vocabulary (10 questions), Comprehension (10), Literary Elements (10), Think Deeper (4 reasoning widgets), and the Standardized Test (10, in SAT and TOEFL formats). Every answer is marked the moment it is given, with a short explanation attached, so a wrong answer teaches instead of just costing a point.
  3. Creative Writing is deliberately not scored. Check My Writing reviews length, spelling and grammar only — never whether an idea is right — so the task stays safe for classroom discussion and for students still finding their English voice.
  4. Retakes are unlimited and the score updates each time. Closing the novel and taking a section as a test, then reopening it to check, works well as a two-pass routine.
  5. Read the Knowledge Banks aloud if you have a few spare minutes. Each part carries four of them, one per graded section, each teaching real science, history, culture or literary craft behind those chapters — this is the CLIL content layer, and it is where the vocabulary and test questions get their footing.
For teachers — assessing and printing
  1. The Report Card tracks every reader — each book, each part, the date, and a running average out of 100, plus a reading streak. Expand a book to see its parts.
  2. Export to CSV from the Report Card when you need marks in your own gradebook or a progress note for parents.
  3. Two printable editions per book. The Teacher Edition carries the full answer key and the complete Knowledge Bank lessons; the Student Edition leaves the answer spaces blank. Both are laid out for handouts.
  4. Print straight from the web page — open the PDF in your browser and use Print. Workbooks are read online or printed — there is no file download, so a copy cannot drift out of your class by email.
  5. Retakes make marking easy: because scores save per attempt with dates, a part assigned twice a term shows growth rather than replacing the earlier mark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do students need the physical book?

Yes. Garden Heights workbooks are companions to the novels — they contain original analysis and activities but do not reproduce the book’s text. Read the original book (available from libraries and booksellers) alongside the workbook.

What is CLIL?

CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning — teaching subject content and language together. Our workbooks build vocabulary and English skills while exploring history, culture, the author’s life, and literary craft. We add a fifth C, Connection (“Teach It”), where students explain what they learned. Test skills are our strength, too: every workbook weaves an integrated Standardized Test section into the novel, covering every SAT and TOEFL question type so learners build real exam skills easily, naturally, and with fun.

Are all vocabulary words taken from the novel?

Most are — but not all. Each part teaches 10 key words chosen to help students understand and complete that part of the workbook. Some words may not appear word-for-word in the original novel: they are essential companions — words needed to discuss the chapters, follow the Knowledge Banks, or handle the academic vocabulary in the Standardized Test section. Every workbook notes this beside its vocabulary list, so students and teachers always know the words are a learning toolkit, not a quotation list.

Can my children share one account?

Yes, on the Family plan — that’s exactly what Family Profiles are for. Family covers up to 4 readers on one account (a parent plus 3 more). Personal · Online All-Access is a single-reader plan, so its scores all belong to that one account. Opening a workbook asks “Who’s studying today?”, and each child’s scores, learning streak, and reading position are saved separately. Add or switch profiles anytime in Settings → Family Profiles, and view each child’s results under the Report Card tab.

Where do I see my child’s scores?

Open the Report Card tab in the top menu. It shows a combined Garden Heights Score, per-book and per-part results with a section-by-section breakdown, and a CSV download for your records. Families can switch between children with the profile chips at the top of the page. A 🔥 streak badge appears when reading happens on consecutive days.

Do we lose our place when we close a workbook?

No. The site remembers where each reader left off: the homepage shows a “Continue where you left off” bar, the Report Card page lists every book in progress, and re-opening a workbook part offers to resume at the exact section you were on.

What do the levels mean?

Books are grouped into eight levels, from Level 1 (Growing Readers, Grades 1–3) up to Level 8 (Mature Classics, Grades 9–12). Levels follow where U.S. public schools actually teach each book — verified against published school curricula — with each level’s Lexile and AR ranges shown for reference. Each level lists its Lexile and AR ranges so you can choose the right fit.

How does grading work?

Multiple-choice, true/false, fill-in, and ordering questions are scored automatically out of 100 with instant feedback. Open-ended writing prompts are for practice and reflection and are not auto-scored.

Is there just one plan?

There are two ways in. Complimentary includes the full Matilda workbook as a permanent gift — a real taste of the method with no card required. Online All-Access ($19.99/mo) then unlocks every workbook and level, family profiles, and report cards for students, families and teachers alike. Can I buy a single workbook PDF?

Yes. Anyone can purchase any individual workbook as a printable PDF — $24.99 per book, including both the Teacher’s and Student Editions (answer key included). What is your refund policy?

The online subscription has a 7-day no-questions refund from each charge date. Workbook PDFs are refundable only while untouched — the moment any PDF in the order is opened, that purchase is final. See our Refund Policy.

What devices work?

Workbooks run in any modern web browser on a computer, tablet, or phone — no app or download required for online use. For the best experience we recommend a desktop or tablet, since the interactive workbooks have more room to work on a larger screen.

How many devices can I use?

Each account can be signed in on up to 3 devices. The same device only ever counts once — signing in again on a phone or computer you already use never takes up a new slot. You can see and remove your registered devices anytime in Account Settings → Devices.

How do I sign in? Is there a password?

There are no passwords or access codes — you sign in with Google (your Gmail or Google account) in one tap. New accounts are created automatically on first sign-in, and your Matilda gift workbook is included from the start. Trouble signing in? Email [email protected] and we’ll help.
