Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus
a novel by Barbara Park
Junie B. Jones is almost six, and she has decided she is not riding the school bus. The trouble is that nobody has offered her a choice. Barbara Park hands the whole story to a kindergartner who says exactly what she thinks, gets a good deal of it wrong, and never once doubts herself — so young readers spend the book seeing more than the narrator does. It is very funny, and underneath the jokes it is about a first day of school, a building full of rules nobody has explained yet, and what happens when a small person decides to solve a big problem by hiding from it.
