The Wanderer
a novel by Sharon Creech
Thirteen-year-old Sophie, adopted and haunted by a past she has buried, sets sail across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the 45-foot sailboat Wanderer with three uncles — Dock, Stew, and Mo — and two cousins, bookish Brian and big-hearted Cody, bound for England to visit their beloved grandfather, Bompie. The novel unfolds through the alternating journals of Sophie and Cody. As the crew battles seasickness, quarrels, tides, and finally a monstrous three-day storm and a towering wave, Sophie is forced to face the memory she has hidden — of the water that once took her first family. Sharon Creech’s Newbery Honor novel (2001) is a story of the sea, of grief and healing, and of the family we are given and the family we find.
